Aircraft used for weather research are unique machines. They are elaborately modified and especially optimized for any operation purpose.
In this context, a KingAir 350 had to be equipped with special brackets to carry silver iodide fuel rods. The aircraft is used in Africa to systematically seed cumulus clouds so they produce precipitation. The mounting is made of glass and carbon fiber, which is covered with a special layer of copper mesh to protect it against lightning strike.
Within this project DG AeroTEC was responsible for the aerodynamic and structural layout of the bracket. Beyond that we prepared all reference documentation and process sheets. We also conducted the necessary testing for the STC (Supplemental Type Certificate).
